Prison Mamula Island

Prison Mamula Island

Destinations

A former fortress and World War II prison, standing at the entrance of the bay with powerful stories and dramatic views.

Fort Mamula – guardian of the Bay entrance

Mamula Island is situated at the very entrance to the Bay of Kotor, between the Luštica peninsula and Prevlaka. The fortress was designed by Austrian general Lazar von Mamula in the mid-19th century, built as a strategic defensive point to control passage into the bay. The circular stone structure, known as Fort Mamula, still stands today as a witness to more than a century and a half of turbulent history in this region.

Throughout history, Mamula Fortress has served various purposes, including its role during World War II when it was used as a prison.

Past and present in a single view

Yet despite this, Mamula has since taken on an entirely new identity – the former fortress and prison have been transformed into an exclusive luxury resort. The contrast between its turbulent past and its sophisticated present only deepens the fascination with this island.

We take you right past Mamula, offering a view of an island that has changed roles through the centuries, yet remained equally mysterious, impressive, and enigmatic all at once.
