Saint George Island
A natural island covered with cypress trees and a medieval monastery, offering a peaceful and mystical scenery.
A natural gem of the Bay of Kotor
Nestled in the heart of the Bay of Kotor, just off the shores of Perast, Saint George Island is one of the most recognizable sights along the Montenegrin coast. It is of natural origin, which sets it apart from the neighboring island of Our Lady of the Rocks, built by human hands – and it is precisely this naturalness that gives it its distinctive character.
The island is home to the Benedictine monastery of St. George, with roots dating back to the 12th century. Surrounded by an old cemetery and dense cypress trees rising above the sea, the monastery feels like a place that has chosen to stand firm against the passage of time.
A view that needs no filter
Access to the island is restricted, protecting it from mass tourism and preserving its authentic atmosphere. A cruise through the bay includes a passage past Saint George – a sight that has remained in the memory of all who have sailed these waters for centuries. From the sea, you can clearly make out the dark green cypresses, the stone monastery walls, and the rocky shoreline – a view that needs no filter or commentary. The Bay of Kotor, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, holds many places worth visiting, but Saint George remains one of those that leaves a lasting impression on everyone who has had the chance to see it.
